According to a report from The Daily Mail, Aston Villa have made an enquiry to sign Huddersfield’s Terence Kongolo. The Dutchman was brought to the Terriers as their record signing but hasn’t lived up to his price tag too much after being a part of a backline that conceded 76 goals in the Premier League last term.Kongolo missed just six games as the Yorkshire side suffered relegation but he could be on for an instant return to the top-flight thanks to Villa. The Midlands outfit have already added one defender to their squad during the transfer window, bringing back Kortney Hause on a permanent basis following the conclusion of his loan spell.Despite that, the Villans are refusing to overpay for Tyrone Mings amid speculation they could make a £12m swoop for Adam Webster. If Kongolo became a further signing, he could feature in Dean Smith’s starting XI as a left-back or centre-half.The Daily Mail’s report suggests that Smith is eager to bolster his defensive ranks but would the Huddersfield man be a good addition? Football FanCast writers have had their say.Billy Meyers“I won’t lie and say I’m a Terence Kongolo expert, but there must be something about him given the fact Huddersfield smashed their transfer record to bring him to the club on a permanent basis. He appears to be a talented centre-back who has international experience under his belt, and also time on his side at the age of 25. “However, one would assume that the Terriers would want their £17.5m back, which could be tough for Villa having already broken their own transfer record on Wesley. Perhaps an attempt to get one of last season’s loan heroes in Tyrone Mings or Axel Tuanzebe would be a better shout for the play-off winners.”Charles Jones“Signing a defender from a team with one of the worst defences in the division may not be the smartest idea for Aston Villa. The Dutchman wasn’t even the standout performer in the Terriers defence during their Premier League stay as Mathias Jorgenson often looked more composed at the back than he did. With that being said, Villa do need to improve their backline having lost 2018/19 loanees Tyrone Mings and Axel Tuanzebe back to their parent clubs, but Kongolo may not be the answer to their prayers. “They would be much better off signing Tuanzebe again. In a season where survival is their main priority Dean Smith’s side can’t afford to take any risks in defence and signing Kongolo would certainly be a gamble.”James Beavis“It’s difficult to make a judgment on Terence Kongolo as a Premier League player given Huddersfield Town have been an awful team pretty much ever since the Dutchman has been with them. However, the fact that he has represented the Netherlands on four occasions previously suggests he clearly has something about him, and that he would be an inspired buy at the right price.“I guess the main benefit to signing the 25-year-old would be his versatility – he can play at centre-back or left-back, as he did for the Terriers last term. That particular trait makes him similar to Tyrone Mings, and he could prove to be a great alternative to the Bournemouth man if no permanent deal can be found for the 2018/19 loanee.”
