Tottenham Hotspur are serious about the possibility of signing Jack Clarke from Leeds United this summer, per Football.London.
What’s the word?
Clarke made his breakthrough under Marcelo Bielsa this season, making a total of 25 appearances in all competitions and scoring two goals while registering two assists.
Leeds, of course, failed to win promotion to the Premier League, as they were beaten by Derby County in the play-offs.
The aforementioned report claims that Spurs scouts have watched Clarke numerous times this season and that the club’s interest in securing him is legitimate.
It is unclear how much he would cost – the report states that Leeds could value him from anything between £12m and £20m – and there is the possibility that he could be signed and then loaned out again next term.
Indeed, there are doubts that he would be able to thrive in the Premier League next season, given his age and relative lack of experience in the top-flight.
Talented but not a priority
Spurs need to be prioritising their bigger deals this summer.
The same report claims that the club are going “all out” to sign Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon and that deal is the one that really needs doing.
Clarke, of course, is a precocious young talent and he could well be worth double the top-end of his asking price within two seasons.
But Spurs are so close to breaking through and becoming genuine Premier League title challengers, showing on their road to Madrid that just a couple of genuine world class talents could take this team over the top.
Clarke isn’t going to have a say in that next season; Ndombele is.
If they miss out on one of them this summer, the former needs to be the one.
