Leeds United goalkeeper Rob Green is likely to leave the club if he is demoted to the bench at the start of the Championship season, according to Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Phil Hay.
What’s the word?
Green was first choice under former manager Garry Monk last season, playing in every Championship game.
Doubt has crept in over the likelihood of the shot-stopper keeping hold of the number one place due to the arrival of Felix Wiedwald and new boss Thomas Christiansen.
German keeper Wiedwald has an opportunity of stealing Green’s position due to his experience in the Bundesliga playing for Werder Bremen.
The Yorkshire Evening Post’s Phil Hay believes that if Wiedwald is selected to start in the early games of the season, which begins this weekend, then Green will look for a new club.
What should Green do?
The position of goalkeeper allows players to prolong their careers, much more than that of an outfield player.
However, at the age of 37, Green is nearing the end of his playing days, so there is every possibility that his next move will be his final one.
If it becomes clear that the former England international will have to play second fiddle at Elland Road, then it is understandable if he searches for a new club.
Green’s performances last season prove that he still warrants a first-team spot, and plenty of Championship clubs would arguably love to have him in their ranks.
In a way it would be admirable for Green to leave as he would be rejecting the easy option of sitting on the bench and picking up his wages.
